I did ask Santa Claus for versions of VDS for the Mac and Linux...
Is there any chance this could at least be considered? (and post the
reasons for and against, so that those of us who *need* multiplatform
windowing utilities have some arguments to wield).

Happy New Year

Theres little chance for a Mac version. But the new Mac OS uses a version of Linux so it may just work. As for Linux this may be possible. SADE needs to purchase the new version of Delphi 6 and recompile VDS in it. They can then purchase Kylix also made by Borland and recompile VDS to work for Linux. There will be some major modifications needed for it to work on Linux but it is very well possible. However I doubt this will be done anytime soon Sad

OK, that sounds more hopeful than most, thanks.

There certainly would be some mods needed, but there's no shortage
of people willing to help, I suspect.

If SADE decides to examine this, please ask the users to contribute.

VDS Is currently written in version 2 of Delphi if I recall right. But this does not mean it wont compile well in Delphi 6. Unless they are using special components then it should be fairly easy to use Delphi 6 and compile the source. I'm sure there will be some minor fixes needed before it will compile. Also you will have to know that the runtime for vds will become quite larger when compiled in Delphi 6 as there are many new enhancements and fixes in Delphi 6 that will added into the compiled dll file. Sure Delphi 6 is really good (I'am a user too), but
we enyoy vds also for the little size of the generated exe and the runtimes.
Hopes that the runtimes won't became too big Confused

I would suspect the runtime being around 500 kb after being compressed with Petite if compiled with Delphi 6. About 100-150 kb larger then it is now.

if the runtimes go up to 500Kb
why use vds.
A simple exe compiled with Delphi 6 is 180Kb (packed with UPX)

yeah I know that coding with vds is kiet kickly but with Delphi 6 too (if you are an old user)

PS : escuse me for my bad english Cool

Yeah true. I use Delphi exclusively now too. However VDS is good for making quick applications with few lines of code, also remember the runtime needs only to be installed once on the machine and VDS exe's typically are under 50 kb.

VDS also is good for those that don't want to dabble into full blown programming environments such as C++ and Delphi. Alot of those programming environments can be overwhelming to people and most of the time are just overkill for what most people need accomplished.

I think the question is less how easily VDS would port to Delphi 6 as how it would port to Kylix. Having played with Kylix I can see that it doesn't support any Windows API stuff and even many basic system calls are different. Also the CLX components are quite a lot different to the VCL components used by Delphi programs written for Windows. It would need a total rewrite, IMO.

Then again there is the question of would people be prepared to pay for it? It seems to me that on Linux most people expect software to be free. That is find for hobbyists who want to write software just for the fun of it, but anyone who wants to earn a living from it will stick to writing for Windows.

Supply and Demand:

If there's no demand, then there's no use providing the supply.

Personally, I would love to be able to offer some of my programs for Linux.

But I honestly don't see SADE spending that much upgrading their Delphi, getting Klyx and possibly having to upgrade many of their components also, and then spending all the time rewriting the code.
