|
|
Before I eventually start a large project I wonder if someone could tell the limitations that VDS scripting has?
Number of characters in a strings?
How many variables can it handle?
How many IF/ENDS?
How many labels and subroutines?
How many lines can a script have?
Hope someone can post what they know here about any known limitations.
Thanks for your time _________________

VDS 3 and later....
Number of vars are 35 standard (%1 - %9, and %a - %z)
plus:
- VDS3 allows 128 user defined vars
- VDS4 allows 220 user defined vars
REPEAT/UNTIL and GOSUB (and prolly WHILE/WEND) are
limited to a maximim nesting of 9 deep (error message 10).
There are no apparent limits on:
- String length (both in vars and lists)
- IF/END nesting
- Lines in a script
- Number of labels
Windows 95 has a visible LIST limit of 32767 items (this is NOT
VDS related), but the LIST CREATE lists do not have this limit
in Windows 95. Windows 98 and later does not have this limit.
Large files (several megs) can be a nightmare - if available
memory is low, a file may not load completely into a list (and
you get no warning). However, you can use @binfile() in VDS4
and VDSINOUT.DLL with VDS3 for direct file access (straight
from the hard drive).
Hopefully someone else will post anything I missed...

So I can have an unlimited amount of IF/ENDS like this:
| Code: | if %1
bla bla
else
bla
end
if %2
bla bla
else
bla
end
if %3
bla bla
else
bla
end
if %4
bla bla
else
bla
end |
but only 9 inside like this:
| Code: | if %1
if %1
bla bla
else
bla
end
else
bla
end |

There's apparently no limit on IF/END nesting.
It's GOSUB, REPEAT/UNTIL (and prolly WHILE/WEND)
that has a limit of 9 deep.
But ya got the principle right - nesting is one within another,
within another, etc.....
BTW, each IF requires an END...

Thanks alot Mac.
You'll deffanently get your name mentioned in my first app I make with VDS
I think I got the main basics of the language now.
But offcourse, there's a longs ways to go yet
I remember reading somewhere about a limitation about IF/ENDS, and I must say that kinda got me really worried. That's why I posted this thread. But if that was to be true, I don't think VDS would be very usefull to large application development
I've been working with MMB for several years now, and also I've been doing NeoBook, PHP, AutoIt and a few other things inbetween, but so far, none of them even compares to the power I've seen that VDS is capable of
Someone said that to use the vdsipp extension I had to use the freeware|1214124 something after the external command when compiling, but I have tried that without the number it works fine when compiled. Any info on this? _________________

The VDSIPP.DLL (by PGWARE) doesn't require a key - I
think someone may have mentioned VDSINET (by TOMMY)
which I think does require the public key, even though it's
freeware. Doing this allows someone to release a DLL to the
public without re-writing/compiling the DLL.

I just now figured out that if I highlight all the codes for the DIALOG I can edit it with the Dialog Designer.
That will make it alot easier _________________

You can just put the cursor at the begining of the "DIALOG CREATE" line,
and then press the F2 key and the dialog designer will open and you can
edit. You don't have to highlight all the code for the dialog.
