Hi everyone,
I've been working on a new VDSWORLD design for a long time and it has
finally been coming together. Please take a look at it and vote or reply as
to what you think. It's still going to be a few more weeks or so until we
can finalize the design and details and get everything working and
functional.
Take a look at the new design at:

Thanks for looking
Best regards,

I like the new proposed design. It's clean, professional, modern and
easy to follow the content as well.
I agree though that the logo needs something more to it than it is
now. _________________ 'What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.' - Confucius (550 b.c. to 479 b.c.) |

Personally I think we should use a cool version of the logo that has always
been used - it's everywhere already here so why not use it on the main
site
Maybe just open it Photoshop and apply some effects to make it look cool
Also the old design looks busy I think _________________ FreezingFire

hi vic,
hope i'm not being too picky here
- the logo is too pale on the current background...perhaps an outline around each letter would give it greater/better definition
- can i ask why there are dutch messages on the page?
- you have listed the top dll files which is a good idea...what about having one for the topd dsu file too?
- for the top dll files, can you put something like [info] next to each one so that folks can read about the posted info of each of these dll's without having to download them? this way they can find out about what each dll does and then decide whether they want to download it or not...
- same thing with the top dsu (if you are going to include them on the page)
- personally, i don't like the "news" items about the new smiley, the new dll,...on the home page as it...just a matter of taste...perhaps a news section could be used with a brief message and a link to the full message
- there is no link/boxes to the chat program recently implemented
overall, i think that it is a great improvement on the previous design and colour scheme...i think that it is more pleasant to the eye and has less colour contrasts (which makes it easier on the eyes)...me think
i also like the mouseover effects you have used
hope you don't mind my comments

Hi Serge,
I just wanted to address your comments - they're all good ones, but
please realize that the page is only a sample page - the true new vdsworld
will be dynamic.
With the new vdsworld, I believe there is language support built into it,
as well as a templating system.
Also, the logo in place is only a temporary logo - it's only a placeholder
for now, as the text below it suggests.
As for top dll files, those are the plain top files at vdsworld - it's not
filtered to only include dll files - you will see the same at the current
'working' version of the site.
The news items on the page are just sample items - when the project is
in final production mode the news will probably be the same as on the
site right now.
All in all, just keep in mind it's a sample page that doesn't really function,
although I think Vic has the functioning code. There's a lot to be done. _________________ FreezingFire

I have a few thoughts:
VDSWORLD :: Home - prolly need not be there on homepage.
even on other pages it may added inline with the logo.
Logo definitely needs improvement as it already says.
Lots of announcements make the the page long and there will be a single column in the centre- both looks a bit uncomfortable.
How about having a small scroller instead - showing announcement headings/single line description. User can click a link to it's page if he wants more details.
In recent files again two sections may be better DSU/DLL and others as the former are far few and more reusable and of importance to more users.
Does adding a menu system (like in old one) spoils the design - not too sure if it does
Also a link to the forum chat - This may bring in more peiople to use VDS.
As such the page looks great
Well these are just my opinions and hope you don't mind them. _________________ Regards

Thanks for all your comments
First, let me explain something about the files displayed in the 'top files', 'recent files', and 'top authors' sections: the new VDSWORLD doesn't require anymore that you have to signup as an author: each forum member automatically becomes an author.
So there's no need anymore to login at two different places.
But, you don't become an author as soon as you registered an VDSWORLD account, the Site Team has to activate your 'author account'.
That's why only Tommy's files are displayed, he's the only actived author at the new VDSWORLD (I was too lazy to activate the other ones ).
Of course will all current authors (at the current vdsworld) automatically become activated at the new VDSWORLD.
Many thanks for your suggestions Serge (as usual). I'll create an outline around the letters of the logo.
Some messages are displayed in dutch, because the site uses the translated strings phpBB uses as much as possible, to give the site a more 'personal' touch
And because I was logged in as when saving the preview, and my language is set to dutch, some messages are displayed in dutch.
Anyway, I've uploaded a new preview with the messages in English.
If some people would like to translate the other strings (like 'Recent files', 'Recent posts', the text when uploading files, etc.) please let me know
If the rest of you agrees, I'll let the announcements be truncated after about 300 characters. This way the page doesn't become too long.
To read the complete message, you'll have to click the 'read full' link.
These announcements are parsed from the News/Annoucnements forum, in case you had not seen it already And I agree with Serge that we only must post real News/Announcements, not product annoucements. But the annoucements showed at the preview page are just placeholders for 'the real ones', just like everything else
I dunno if a menu would spoil the design... I think it's a bit superfluous, since all links are displayed in the 'Navigation' module. And when adding a menu users will have to scroll down again.
BTW: I seldom used the menu to navigate trough VDSWORLD
Okay, I'll add a link to the forum chat
I hope I've answered all your questions
Regards,

personally, I've never used the menu. I just never really found it
useful for me at VDS World. _________________ 'What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.' - Confucius (550 b.c. to 479 b.c.) |

Isn't that design from a PHP-Nuke template?
