I am a malware researcher/reverse engineer, and due to lack of time and laziness to learn a new programming environment, I use intensively VDS. My main program which control and sort the virus signatures databases is made mostly in VDS. Everything else, decryption algorithms, various checking and optimizations, and more. Of course, I am using various tricks to achieve my goals, I call utilities and I use multiple VDS libraries. I thought to find someone who still uses VDS (as I said, I have no reason to learn something new, I have other hard things to do every day), to exchange experience and ideas. In my work, the key word is "speed", and VDS is not so fast, but, I found few tricks to increase its speed
VDS is dead? It's a shame, of course, but... A personal opinion, Windows 8 appeared and it deepens even more the gap between the user and the operating system, and that's a personal thing that I dislike, but professionally I love it Beyond appearances, all I know is that whatever technology Microsoft force you to use, both bad guys and antivirus companies will see their business as usual. The bad guys will continue to create malware to steal money from accounts, few million dollars made in a few months is a good stimulant for anyone, and the antivirus companies will sell their products more easily because users remain slowly without any other custom solution (user friendly NOT EQUAL TO able to do many things) and they must put all their hopes in a licensed antivirus product. Tablet and laptop already started merger, Windows was inspired by all his competitors charming the world now with those colored rectangles, anyway, Windows will never die I am old, as VDS, and already tired of all these revolutionary changes. Finally, you can see the truth only in assembly language

Well, I'll be lurking about as long as this forum is here, and I'm friendly enough.
I'll be using VDS every now and then until it can't be used anymore.

As long as VDS works on whatever version of Windows I end up using, then when I need something I'll use VDS.

Same here. I'll be using VDS until I can't anymore. I come to this board at least once a day.

What will suck is when a version of Windows does come out that VDS won't work on... I will be completely devastated. VDS pretty much was the majority of my inspiration and once I don't have that, I'll pretty much be done with programming forever.

Yes that will suck.... I hope that doesn't happen. That would take a lot of changes on MS's part to change the code/API for the whole OS.

| Don't think that's going to happen for some time - maybe Windows 10 at the earliest - 5+ years from now? Even then I think it will work fine. MS wont move to a fully managed OS unless Windows RT really starts to take off.

Well, if it wasn't because of Windows Compatibility features, VDS wouldn't even work on Windows 7. That is the two latest Windows versions. So, personally I don't think VDS is going to be a useable language for much longer.

How so? The only problem with VDS and Windows 7 was installing VDS itself. Other than that, it works great without any issues and needing compatibility mode. Most of my customers use my apps on Windows 7 as well as all the customers from my FT job in which I use VDS for developing.

Well, you kinda answered your own question yourself. Like you said, the installer won't work on Windows 7 without the Compatibility thingy. So, if you can't install VDS, you can't use it

The installer is a SFX zip file and is easy enough to extract. The just create a Tools folder and move all the tools into that folder (if you have used VDS before you will most likely know what the tools are) then run the VDS.exe and your all set. Now, .DSC and .DSP file will not be registered to open with the vds.exe and it is not just as easy as using Open With. If I remember right the VDS IDE uses DDE to open vds script through the registry. Just copy this to a .REG file, change the path to where you want VDS "installed" (or leave at C:\\Program Files\\Visual DialogScript 6) and add to the registry. .DSC and .DSP files will now open with VDS when double clicked.
