For a long time I was searching for a stand-alone Windows "distribution", so that I was able to use it in case of emergencies. A little hour ago, I found out about BartPE (Bart Preinstalled Environment) which basicly just puts a stripped-off version of Windows XP on a CD-Rom... I have not tried it yet, but from the things I've read I think it is a good resource which VDS programmers can use, since this way you can create and run VDS scripts to, for example, remove a virus from a computer, without having to boot the infected Windows system! More information can be found at the website below.

Please read the Legal information before installing and using the program, since you are not allowed to just restribute your own-put-together system...

Funny, I just discovered this yesterday (okay, I heard about it a few weeks ago but I just got round to trying it.) It is indeed brilliant. I just licensed Image For Windows backup software, to back up my system to an external hard drive, and wanted to make a boot CD I could use to restore images to the C partition, since obviously you can't do that at the same time as using it. There is a plug-in for IFW that lets you do that.
I added my Tech-Protect VDS-based anti-virus as a plug-in. It's a GUI that lets you run F-Prot for DOS as a Windows anti-virus. Using my updater you can download the latest F-Prot files, and then scan the system with them.
I'll be doing some more work on this next week, but I just thought I'd mention this as I saw your post. It's certainly a great tool.

I have been looking for something like this for months. I tried the Windows 3.11 stripped-off version which came with the Windows 95 & 98 setup (inside mini.cab), together with a program which could simulate 32-bit programs on a 16-bit OS, but it all didn't work like I wanted.

Just for fun, here's a plugin I wrote to add VDS support to BartPE. Feel free to do anything you like with it.

Looks pretty cool. Does it like take parts of your existing Windows XP
installation and put them together or something?

Yes. It builds it from the i386 folder on your hard drive.

BartPE includes a few things like a custom start menu and things like that. If you would like to create something yourself, but don't want to reboot everytime, you could download an evaluation version of Microsoft's Virtual PC. I just installed it, and it is possible to run the .iso file created by BartPE. I believe it expires in 40 days or something, but I guess I won't be using it that long...
