I must be missing something here.
After I registered VDS 5 I got an Icon Designer.chm help file but no exe. I still have an old version from one of my previous versions of VDS but my understanding was that a new one was included with VDS5.
Has anybody else received the new one
Thanks..........

No. In fact, last week I downloaded IconEdit32 from http://www.onlythebestfreeware.com/program.asp?program_id=135. It's really excellent. Grab it now, because it's a PC Magazine utility and the, er, nice people at ZDNet have had it removed from their website so that they can make people pay for a CD containing these utilities which were once free. _________________ The Tech Pro

I've used this one forever. It's great. Only I thought in the license agreement
it said that you weren't allowed to redistribute it at all. _________________ FreezingFire

I use Microangelo as always. It's very good. All my drawing is made with that program version 98. Even big stuff, I draw by parts with that program and then apply the effects with a real gfx editor, lol |

I was being ironic. I don't know if any of you guys make enough from your software to be able to afford their fees for listing at their sites. I know I don't. _________________ The Tech Pro

I payout $99 a month to cnet/zdnet to get my software listed/up to date with them, it's proved to be pretty good.
I currently only have one title updated monthly otherwise I would have to pay around $500 - $600 a month to get all of my software titles updated monthly. Which isn't that bad but I'd rather not spend that much at one place just for updating software when I can pay for real advertising.
Their initial fee of $79 to get your software listed honestly is worth it, you get thousands of downloads from zdnet and cnet. This fee is just one time to get your software listed, if you want to update it monthly you have to shell out a minimum of $99 per month. |

I didn't realise there was a one time fee. I get about 10 registrations a month of my $12 program World Clock. So I'm not wild about giving best part of a month's earnings to ZD without any guarantee of a payback.
I have had ONE reggie so far of GetBack. I just can't understand why there is so little interest in a program that I have personally found to be a life-saver on several occasions.
BTW I will happily give free registrations of GetBack to those who regularly contribute code to this forum, if they want one. (It requires NT, 2K or XP though.) _________________ The Tech Pro

Julian, I think you should make more advertisement for your GetBack program. I never used it, but I also haven't seen anything like it (or well, not for $12). If people know it's their and what it does, they probably will try & buy...
Edit:
I just downloaded your program, and it says you also are a PC magazine columnist. Can't you make some advertisements that way? _________________ [ Add autocomplete functionality to your VDS IDE windows! ]

If it worked under the 9x platform also, I'd be happy to take you up on that.

If you are willing Jules, I would love a copy. I used to use GoBack, but, it did some really bad things....oh...like completely mess up my computer! GetBack would be a great solution. BTW. If you need a logo for any reason, you can give me a shout. I'll hook you up. _________________ Chris

Unfortunately, magazines don't like writers using their pages to promote their own private stuff. _________________ The Tech Pro

Okay, a registration code is on the way shortly.
Regarding logos and stuff, and a point FF just made to me in an email about the user interface. Many small apps and utilities have really snazzy user interfaces, which makes it very hard to make a good-looking app if you're a programmer with no artistic talent whatever (like me.) If you're developing shareware you also probably don't mind spending your time but don't have money to have an interface professionally developed. I'm looking at Account Logon (www.accountlogon.com) as an example.
What I think would be a killer add-in for VDS would be a product that enabled the artistically talentless to create decent looking skins. _________________ The Tech Pro
