I had a report from someone who downloaded and installed my Tech-Pro Utilities package (http://www.tech-pro.net/files/tputils.exe) who said that it caused the system to hang at start-up. He believes that it is a conflict with Norton Firewall or Norton SystemWorks. Does anyone have either of these products and could install the above file to see if it causes a problem?

It's a bit worrying, because it is basically just a small VDS system tray application that uses VDSPopup, and it shouldn't be capable of conflicting with anything.[/url]

Hi:
I had a problem with one of my programs and a firewall application. I forget which firewall program.

The problem ended up being that the vds exe had to be added to a "trusted" application list within the firewall program.

Hope this helps.

Its something to try, but I can't imagine why a program would need to be trusted by a firewall unless it tried to connect to something on the Internet. Which the utility in question doesn't. No clue

What kind of things does your program do? If it changes stuff in the registry or something, that could be the reason it is blocked by Norton SystemWorks...

It's just a system tray application launcher. It stores its own information in the registery, like most apps do.

As is always the way, the user hasn't replied after I suggested a couple of things to try to see if it really was TPMenu that caused the problem.

hi jules,

no answer but i have a vds problem related problem as well...a user has reported to me that the program i wrote and that she is using is creating havoc with her printing...when she uninstalls it, it runs fine...when she installs it, she can't print anymore...the program in question has nothing to do with printing and yet it has that effect on her computer...this is the first time that this problem has been reported to me and i have had more than 2500 registrations on that program

a very small group of people have installed the same program under xp and complained that their system became extremely unstable...again a very small group of computers have been affected that way

i'm just wondering if your user's problem (and mine) is not a hardware/... compatibilty problem

serge

For some reason when i first installed VDS itself my McAffee Firewall prevented me from running VDS until i added it to a list of trusted applications

the funny thing is that the list was for Applications which connect to the net.
unless i stand corrected i beleived VDS itself never did

after i added it everything ran fine

it also happened to me on a small vds app which i wrote then ran on my second computer
it did not access the net but my firewall poped up asking me if i wanted to allow it to

it would not work unless i said yes

There is no code that would try to connect to the Internet in the VDS IDE, or in the runtime. Since the IDE loads the runtime, it could be that which is causing the problem in both cases.

If this problem can be reproduced by others then it needs to be identified and fixed because it is likely to result in VDS apps being regarded as spyware by potential users.

Hi Julian,

I have both Norton Firewall and Norton SystemWorks installed. I just downloaded and installed your file, then rebooted...

No problems at startup. (Although occasionally, my system lags for some reason anyway at startup.)

Cheers,

- Boo

That's probably Norton. It's such a resource hog it virtually takes over a system at start-up.
