Hi all,

A friend just mentioned that an article about Visual Dialogscript has been placed in the Dutch magazine PC-Active. It says that it is a good alternative for expensive programming languages like Visual Basic and Delphi. Also, the author of the article is active on this forum... Wink When I was reading the article, I remembered the name from something, but today I found out that he is the same person as "our" JRoza... Smile

If somebody wants a translation of the article, please say, so I can work on it... Smile

Visual DialogScript
An inexpensive, complete programming environment
By Jan Roza

Times are difficult for the hobby programmers. The prices for software like Visual Basic en Delphi are so high, that they are uninteresting for personal use. Visual DialogScript is affordable, but is it a good alternative?

Who searches for shareware programs, gets screens full with nice software. One thing which catches the eye, is that most websites belong to real companies, while it were private websites of hobby programmers just a few years ago. This is probably caused by the fact that programming languages like Visual Basic and Delphi became more and more expansive with every new version. For hobby programmers, it isn’t interesting anymore to pay hundreds of euros for such a program. Unfortunately, there are little affordable alternatives for these kind of complete packets. But who surfs to the website of Commercial Research Ltd and looks at the description of Visual DialogScript (VDS), will see that the developers explain that VDS is thé good and payable alternative for people who want to make complete programs. The programming languages can best be described as a crossing between a simple batch language and a complete programming language like Visual Basic. Time for use to take a close look at the programming environment.

Development Envoirment
One thing which catches the eye immediately, is that VDS comes with tools like a integrated editor, a debugger, a compiler and a project manager. The editor uses syntax highlighting for functions, commands, comments and variables, so even the most extensive code stays clarifying. On the left side of the window is a margin in which you can add breakpoints to lines by clicking with your mouse. With the toolbar on top of the screen, text can be copied, cut and pasted. You can also run the code direct or step by step with this buttons. In the registrated version, code can be converted to a compact exe-file. In the non-registrated VDS-version, programs can only be started via the developing environment. When running the code step by step, VDS marks the active line with a yellow bar and will show the values of variables in the debug window. For long pieces of code, you can use the Find-selectionfield in the toolbar to jump to a random section in the programming code. With the Project Manager tab, a name and icon can be assign for the made program executable.

Programming Language
For people who are already programming, have to get acclimatized a bit at the beginning, because operations like additions, subtractions, dividing and multiplying don’t work like in other languages with operators (+, -, / and *) but with functions like @SUM and @PROD. Comparisons like IF A = B look different in VDS, like @IF(@EQUAL(A,B)). But, you will get used to it in no time and it seems to be just as readable as in traditional languages. The VDS-language holds more than two hundred commands and functions and can hold a maximum number of variables of almost three hundred per program, which is more then enough to build a good program in normal ways. Via the VDSWORLD website (www.vdsworld.com), a lot of, often free, extensions to the VDS-language can be found.

Conclusion
VDS really is a powerful product with which both simple batch-scripts as complete programs can be made. The programming language is very clearly and can be learned rapidly. The Dialog Designer is a good tool to quickly design and build dialogs. The compiler creates unique, small program executables. While programs like Visual Basic and Delphi are more widespread then VDS, it really is a good alternative for the home-programmer. There are quite a lot expansions to be found on the internet. The program truly is worth the firm registration fee.

Hi Skit3000,

Thanks for taking the time to do this! Smile

FYI: This article reminds me of a short paper I wrote about VDS back in 1999. (The paper was an assignment for a class I was taking at the time.) For a bit of nostalgia, I will attach the paper (as a zipped .PDF file) to this post. Although my paper obviously covers an older version of VDS, certain details are still relevant. Perhaps I should revise the document?!?! Cool

You will see some familiar names and terms in the text... Enjoy.

Cheers,

- Boo

I just thought it was about time to give VDS a little help in trying to get it better known with a greater public. It is a great product and like Julian mentioned in another part of this forum it's a niche product, so a little advertising is well earned by VDS.

thanks for that jan

it has been a concern at vdsworld that vds needs more promoting and it has been difficult to know what to do and how to do it

I think the best way to advertise VDS is by making great programs and make it clear in the aboutscreen, the help file and the documenation it's been built with VDS. And of course try and get magazines do a review of VDS. Being a freelance author for a Dutch magazine gave me the perfect opportunity to put the spotlight on VDS. A nice follow up would be to write a monthly tutorial to show the readers how to program in VDS, but for that I don't have enough sparetime. (Writing is just a hobby for me which pays part of the other hobbies Laughing )

Glad I could contribute a little bit.

Jan, if PC-Active is interested in such a thing, maybe we (everybody on VDSWORLD who wants to help Smile) could help you with ideas to write about? Smile Some ideas can be like a "how to make an anti-spyware script", which could come in handy for lots of people, while they right now don't know how to do such things... Smile

Well I have good news, because the publisher wants to make VDS it's main attraction on the next CD-ROM and would like to contact Commercial Research to see if they are interested in selling VDS copies for a special price to readers of PC-Active as a promotional tour. Does anyone have a emailaddress of Commercial Research Ltd so the editors can get in contact with them to discuss a deal?
